Cutting the Cable TV

We’ve been looking to get rid of Comcast for some time. When my job said they would pay for the internet we decided maybe it was time to change things around. We bumped our internet service from 100MB download and 10MB upload speeds to doubled 200MB download and 20MB upload speed. This has been a great upgrade since we got the special price un-contracted which made it about the same as we were paying for the first year.

Giving up the cable TV portion was a concern. I love my TiVo and was a bit concerned that it would render it obsolete. I considered the channels that I watched such as ScyFi, AMC, and Bravo which would only be available on Cable or a streaming service like it. I considered all my shows that were on network TV and how they would work with my TiVo.

I started out testing 3 streaming services that promoted cutting the chord.

  • DirectTV Now: Higher Priced, more shows, allows 1 stream, ok UI and UX and doesn’t have a cloud DVR (yet).
  • SlingTV: Cheapest, has fewer channels, sloppy UI and UX. Also has somewhat of a cloud DVR which acts like an on demand service, has commercials, but tough to navigate.
  • Playstation Vue: Mid price ($40 gets me everything I need), allows 5 streams local to my city limits, has a great UI and UX and also has a cloud DVR. The cloud DVR however is limited and has commercials and works like an on demand service. It stores the most recent episodes for 30 days before automatically deleting them
  • HBO Now I decided to purchase separately outside of iTunes and these streaming services so I have more freedom to access it via AppleTV, Roku, etc..

So I went with Playstation Vue for the reasons listed above and feel I made the best decision for my needs. I bought a pretty good antenna for local channels and found out that CW is on local TV (this made my TiVo needs much more necessary and a majority of my shows are still recordable with the ability to skip commercials). The only channels I have yet to figure out are FX and BCC but will look into it more.

Since our cable TV portion of our bill was about $85 a month for basic We are saving about $45 a month. Its kind of nice to be cable free which is where TV is going. Feel free to ask me if you have questions and happy to give my feedback.

My lineup for your reference.
